Whitney Resorts
Ultimate Resort
Open: Year-round
A 200-acre resort that sits on the shores of Lake Whitney, the sixth largest lake in the state, just a “Texas stone’s throw” south of the Forth Worth/Dallas Metroplex. Considered the “Striper Capital of Texas,” Lake Whitney is a 23,560-acre Corps of Engineers impoundment that stretches 45 miles up the Brazos River. Scores of marinas, parks, and recreation areas line the shores. Towering cliffs often edge the clear blue waters, and scuba divers explore depths that range to nearly 100 feet.
Lake Whitney State Park, on the eastern shore, encompasses 1,315 acres. The Texas Safari Wildlife Park is just one of the many nearby special attractions that visitors can enjoy. More than 2,500 exotic animals from throughout the world roam free on 850 acres of plains, hills, and canyons. A seven-mile Safari Trail drive introduces animals in natural habitats. Highlights include a restored Tonkawa Indian Cave with a 70-ft. waterfall, petting zoo, animal nursery, and frontier town replica. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum at Fort Fisher is a popular attraction you can visit in Waco, just about 30 miles south of the resort. The facility is a replica of the original Texas Ranger fort that was established in 1837. The displays commemorate the history and heritage of the Texas Rangers, and it also houses a famous collection of guns and weapons from the Old West along with Native American artifacts and Western art. Waco is also home to the Dr. Pepper Museum housed in the original 1906 bottling plant and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A Waco chemist, R.S. Lazenby, created the original formula for Dr. Pepper in 1884, and to this day it has remained virtually unchanged.
